Netas make big promises, posters flood the walls, and someone’s bound to ask, "Who’re you voting for?"

Confused about where to vote or what to bring? Don’t worry—this guide makes voting simple, no hassle!

Know What You’re Voting For

Before voting, understand the election type. India has three levels: national, state, and local. Each impacts different decisions but affects your daily life.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) manages the process, ensuring fairness and transparency.

Lok Sabha Elections

  • Held every five years, voters elect 543 MPs to the Lok Sabha.
  • Results decide the ruling party/alliance, Prime Minister, and central government.
  • Impacts national policies like foreign affairs, defense, and economy. E.g., 2024 elections kept the BJP-led alliance in power, shaping economic and foreign policy.

Vidhan Sabha Elections

  • Usually every five years, voters elect state MLAs (seats vary, e.g., Uttar Pradesh ~403, Goa 40).
  • Decides the Chief Minister and state government, handling state issues like electricity, education, and local laws.

Panchayat/Municipal Elections

  • Frequency varies by region, electing local representatives.
  • Manages daily issues like garbage collection, water pipes, streetlights, and schools. E.g., Delhi municipal elections affect waste management and public transport.
Narendra Modi, elected Prime Minister again after the 2024 Indian national election, beginning his third consecutive term.

Voting Eligibility

You can legally vote if you meet these simple conditions:

  • You are an Indian citizen
  • You are 18 years or older
  • Your name is listed in the Electoral Roll — and you can vote only in your registered constituency

Not sure if you’re registered?
Visit the ECI official website at https://electoralsearch.eci.gov.in or use the “Voter Helpline” app. Just enter your name, constituency, or EPIC number (your Voter ID) to check your registration status.

You can also call the voter helpline 1950 (don’t forget to add your area code before dialing).

NRIs (Non-Resident Indians)

If you hold Indian citizenship and have not renounced it, you can register to vote in the constituency mentioned on your passport. However, you must physically return to India to vote — no online or overseas voting allowed.

To register, use Form 6A and submit a copy of your passport along with a recent photograph.

Special Groups

People over 80 years old, persons with disabilities, or certain service personnel (like military) can apply for postal ballots.

You need to submit Form 12-D at least 10 days before voting. Election officials will come to your place to assist with voting, and the process will be recorded by photo or video.

💡
Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) cardholders do not have voting rights.

What You Need to Vote

The most important thing is your Voter ID.
It doesn’t have to be that black-and-white plastic card, but you must have at least one of these:

  • Voter ID card
  • Aadhaar card
  • Driver’s license, passport, or any other valid government ID

No ID, no voting. Don’t gamble thinking, “The staff will let me in.”

Voting Day Process

  1. Go to Your Polling Booth
Around 7 to 15 days before election day, you’ll receive the address of your polling station — either by post, SMS, or you can check it online.
  2. Stand in Line & Verify Your Identity
Election officials will check your name in the voter list and ask for valid ID proof.
  3. Vote Using the EVM (Electronic Voting Machine)
Enter the voting compartment and press the blue button next to your chosen candidate’s name on the EVM. You’ll hear a “beep” sound — that means your vote is recorded.
  4. Check the VVPAT Machine Window
The Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail will display your selected candidate’s name, serial number, and symbol in a transparent window. Make sure it’s correct. If there’s any mismatch, inform the booth official immediately.
  5. Get Your Finger Marked
After voting, officials will mark your left index finger with indelible ink. This proves you’ve voted and prevents double voting.

If you don't like any of the candidates, just press the NOTA (None of the Above) button on the EVM.

But take note:
Even if NOTA gets the highest number of votes, it does not affect the election result and will not lead to a re-election.

Things to Watch Out For

  • No mobile phones, cameras, or any electronic gadgets allowed inside the voting booth. Keep them outside or don’t bring them at all.
  • Stick to voting hours! Most polling stations are open from 7 AM to 6 PM. Don’t show up late thinking they’ll keep the doors open for you.
  • Don’t wear party symbols or clothing with political logos. That counts as campaigning, and yes — it’s illegal.
  • Someone offers you money to vote for a candidate? That’s bribery, and both of you can land in serious legal trouble.
  • Hate all the candidates? Go hit the NOTA button. At least make your protest count.
  • All campaigning must stop 48 hours before voting begins — that means no rallies, no shouting slogans after 6 PM, two days before the vote.

Is gambling legality decided through voting?

In India, the legality of gambling is not decided by a public referendum but through strict legislative voting processes by the central and state governments.

I am illiterate. Can I still vote?

Yes, of course. You don’t need to read or write. On the voting machine, you will see party symbols like lotus (BJP), hand (INC), or broom (AAP). Just press the button next to the symbol you recognize. That’s all.

I live in a different city now. Can I vote from here?

Sorry, no postal voting for regular citizens in India. You must go back to your home constituency to vote.

Only a few people like soldiers, election staff, and certain govt workers get alternative options.

What ID proof is required? Is Aadhaar card enough?

Aadhaar is fine, but it’s not the only option. You can also carry:

  • Voter ID (EPIC)
  • PAN card
  • Passport or Driving License
  • Any Govt-issued photo ID (even job ID for govt staff)

Is my vote really secret? Or will someone find out who I voted for?

Technically, it's secret. You vote alone, and EVM with VVPAT doesn’t show your name.

But in India, people are always a little suspicious, no? Some say EVM can be hacked, but EC says it’s totally secure.

I didn’t receive my voter card. Can I still vote?

Yes. If your name is there in the Electoral Roll, and you show valid ID, you can vote. The card is helpful but not compulsory.

After voting, how long will the ink stay on my finger? Can I remove it?

That ink is serious business! It usually stays for 3 to 7 days, and cannot be removed with soap, bleach, or detergent.

Can I vote online?

No chance. India doesn’t allow online voting yet. You must go in person to the polling booth—even NRIs have to vote physically, no shortcuts.

How do I check candidate backgrounds?

Simple, check the ECI candidate affidavit portal or use KYC apps. But, as always, take what they say with a pinch of salt—promises can be sugar-coated.

Where can I check info about India Election 2025?

The official Election Commission of India (ECI) website is the most reliable place. Also, Wikipedia usually has handy summaries of election dates for different regions.
