India Tour of England means England hosts a Test cricket series with India touring as the visiting team. Matches usually happen at England’s major cricket grounds.
The winner gets important points to boost their chances for the World Test Championship (WTC) final and also bring trophy back home, shows the rivalry between these two cricket giants.
2025 India Tour of England Test series runs from June 20 to August 4. This series is very important because Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were retired from Test cricket earlier this year.
So, attention now is on the new captain Shubman Gill and the younger players he leads. How these youngsters perform is not only about winning this series but also proving they can be the backbone of Indian cricket for the next few years.
The Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy is a special Test series trophy played between India and England whenever the series is hosted in England.
Earlier, it was known as the Pataudi Trophy, named in honour of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, a legendary cricketer who uniquely represented both England and India in Test cricket.
From 2025 series onwards, the trophy has been officially renamed to Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy. This is to celebrate James Anderson, the pace legend from England, and Sachin Tendulkar, the "God of Cricket" from India.
In the end of each Test series, the trophy is awarded to the team that wins more matches. In case the series ends in a draw, the team that held the trophy previously will retain it. For example, in 2021 series, the result was 2–2 and England kept the trophy since they were the last holders.
The points for the India Tour of England are awarded based on the World Test Championship (WTC) points system.
Each Test match gives:
WTC rankings are not based on total points but on Percentage of Points (PCT). It's because of each team plays a different number of matches. For example, in the 2025–2027 WTC cycle, Australia may play 22 matches, while India plays 18. Using PCT ensures fair comparison.
To qualify for the WTC Final, a team must finish in the top two based on PCT.
How is PCT calculated?
PCT = (Points Earned ÷ Total Possible Points) × 100
For example, if a team wins 2 out of 3 Tests and loses 1:
Points = 2 × 12 = 24
Total possible = 3 × 12 = 36
PCT = (24 ÷ 36) × 100 = 66.67%
