What’s New in Premier League 2025–26

The 2025–26 season marks the 34th edition of the Premier League and the 127th season of top-tier football in England. Last season, Liverpool were in top form, clinching their 20th league title and finally equalling Manchester United’s long-standing record!

In the opening match, defending champions Liverpool will host Bournemouth at Anfield. With new signings Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz joining the squad, Klopp will be looking to kick off the campaign in style.

This season also sees the return of three promoted teams: Leeds United, Burnley, and Sunderland. Their comeback brings new energy and unpredictability to the league.

Premier League Format

The Premier League season usually runs from August to May the next year. It follows a points system to decide the champion. Each season, 20 teams compete, playing each other twice — once at home and once away.

Points are awarded after every match as follows:

• Win: 3 points
• Draw: 1 point
• Loss: 0 points

At the end of the season, the team with the highest points wins the league. If teams are tied on points, the following tiebreakers apply in order:

1. Goal difference: goals scored minus goals conceded.
2. Goals scored: total number of goals scored.
3. Head-to-head record: results between the tied teams.

If still tied, a play-off may be required to decide the winner, though this is very rare in Premier League history.

Premier League Relegation Battle

The teams finishing in 18th, 19th, and 20th place are relegated to the EFL Championship. The fight to avoid this is known as the relegation battle, and it usually heats up in the second half of the season, especially near the end.

The “safety mark” is usually considered 40 points, though it’s not a hard rule. In most seasons, 40 points is enough to stay up.

Meanwhile, the top two teams in the Championship are promoted directly. Teams placed 3rd to 6th enter the play-offs to fight for the final Premier League spot.

European Competition Qualification

• Top 4 teams qualify for the next season’s UEFA Champions League.
• 5th place usually gets a spot in the UEFA Europa League.
• 6th or 7th place may qualify for the UEFA Conference League, depending on the winners of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Premier League 2025–26 Full Schedule

The 2025–26 Premier League season will kick off on 15 August 2025 and end on 24 May 2026, featuring 33 weekend matchweeks and 5 midweek rounds, with a total of 380 matches.

Each club will play 19 home games and 19 away games. The full fixture list is created by the Premier League in collaboration with a professional scheduling firm (such as Atalanta Sports), using computer algorithms based on several key rules:

• No club will play two home or two away games in a row at both the start and end of the season.
• Within any block of five matchweeks, clubs must have either a 3-home-2-away or 2-home-3-away balance.
• Around Boxing Day and New Year, no club can play back-to-back home or away games — home and away fixtures must alternate.
